The extension of the La Mojonera Cemetery was built on a flat, triangular-shaped plot of land, immersed in the «sea of plastics» of Almeria. In this special context, an extension was built next to the existing cemetery, which belongs to the settlement of Camponuevo, designed by the architect D. Manuel Jiménez Varea, built in 1958. This project will consist of different phases of growth based on future needs. The new extension will have a new entrance, which will lead to a small square from which there will be access to the niche area, acting as a hinge linking the old part with the new one planned. The access plaza is spatially configured through the delimitation of the white walls, a pool as a fountain and a pre-existing irrigation channel. Through the use of low-cost architecture featuring the use of the wall and the recycling of local elements such as the irrigation ditches, the aim is to give the cemetery its own language, a singular character in order to establish an order for the future phases of enlargement. The spatial typology chosen consists of a central rectangular courtyard with niches arranged on its four sides, which is the model proposed for the development of the future phases of growth. A model that moves from a floor plan formed by longitudinal streets in the old cemetery to a more centralised model formed by courtyards and squares that allow for a more intimate and sincere visit.
